Social Gravy Return with Breezy Nostalgia on “These Are The Times”

by Jack Rush

Los Angeles-based duo Social Gravy are back with “These Are The Times”, a sun-soaked indie-rock single that trades their signature grit for something softer, warmer, and undeniably catchy. It’s only their second release in five years, but the moment you press play, it’s clear this one was worth the wait.

Opening with a smooth blend of keyboard tones and crisp percussion, the track unfolds like a golden-hour memory—effortless, romantic, and glowing with sincerity. Frontman Brad Kohn delivers a heartfelt vocal, backed by subtle gospel-tinged harmonies and breezy “oohs” and “aahs” that elevate the track’s nostalgic pull without overcomplicating it. It’s the kind of song that sneaks into your subconscious, sounding both familiar and fresh.

Lyrically, it’s a love letter to the present moment:
“I’ve dreamt for a lifetime or two / Every second alive / These are the times.”
That line alone captures the essence of Social Gravy’s appeal—sentimental but grounded, simple but resonant. The inspiration came from a real-life moment: an offhand comment by Kohn’s former girlfriend after an award show in sunny Santa Monica—"These are the times, Bradley." It’s the kind of throwaway line that somehow sticks, and in the hands of Social Gravy, becomes a hook that stays with you.

While 2024’s “Lone Wolf” brought a rougher rock edge, this new track showcases the band’s range, folding in jangly guitars, shimmering synth flourishes, and a melody that wouldn't feel out of place between a Coldplay anthem and a Phoenix B-side.

And if “These Are The Times” feels like a pivot, it’s a deliberate one. With a new EP on the horizon, this single serves as a romantic overture—an emotional tone-setter for what’s to come. A music video is also in the works, promising to match the track’s cinematic feel with sunset tones and L.A.’s signature sparkle.

So, who are Social Gravy?
Formed by producer-songwriter Brad Kohn and bassist-visionary Vee Bordukov, the band describes themselves as “romantic rock’n’rollers”—a label that fits their style to a T. Based in Los Angeles but with a sound that travels well beyond, Social Gravy’s music blends vintage rock influences with contemporary polish. Since their 2016 debut “Fools”, they’ve built a catalog of emotionally driven, melody-forward tracks across albums (Behind Every Yes), singles (Let It Out, California), and EPs (A Different Kind).

Called “effortlessly cool” by Rock Era Magazine and praised for “tapping into the Top 40 market without sacrificing integrity” by The Big Takeover, Social Gravy continue to evolve—never content to stay in one lane.

With “These Are The Times”, they remind us why we first fell for them: heartfelt lyrics, organic instrumentation, and a commitment to feeling over flash. It’s a track that doesn’t just soundtrack a moment—it becomes one.

Play it when the sun’s going down. Play it when your heart’s a little full. Play it when you need to remember that these—right now—really are the times.
